Clover Country Farm has established a quality breeding
program for Perendale sheep here in the United States. Perendale sheep
were originally developed in New Zealand by Sir Geoffrey Peren at Massey
University in 1956 as a dual purpose meat and wool breed with qualities conducive
to low intensity management and adaptability to harsh land and weather
conditions. Ease of lambing, food efficiency, disease resistance, ease of
movement and their alertness and activity level are some of the reasons for
choosing this reasonably self-sufficient breed. They are clean-legged and
open-faced as well which lends to making some of the shearing and maintenance
needs a bit easier.
Perendale wool is known for its special qualities of resilience
and strength which make it especially suited to hand spinning yarn for strong,
flexible and durable cloth, clothing and carpeting.
